The Blur

1993 — by © Stef Viaene

With a Super Parvo Debrie camera from the 30-ties, which I had converted to a frame by frame camera, I recorded the commercials that were shown on TV. Sometimes the camera ran with intervals, and sometimes I filmed manually, frame by frame. Due to the slow shutter speed, the TV images became unsharp and sometimes several images were recorded on top of each other. The result was a stream of images that went so fast that it caused a kind of blur. It was precisely that blur that I found significant for the consumer society. I wanted to give my comments (read criticism) on the modern times, anno 1993, and the rat race of production and consumption that in my opinion still exists today, even to a greater extent.
